What is Biodanza?
Biodanza is an integrative and experiential movement system that promotes physical and mental health and quality of life, and supports the development of personal growth potential.
At the heart of this powerful yet sensitive movement and dance method lies the experience of: vitality and relaxation, joy of life and pleasure, courage to face life and creativity, sensitivity and connectedness.
Its unique effect arises from a combination of specially selected music, movement/dance, group interaction, and the experience of the present moment. A diverse range of movement and music activities - some dynamic and rhythmic, others gentle and calm - tangibly release the life energies and emotions inherent in every person.
In the guided “Vivencia” (Spanish: time of experience / max. 2 hours), people with no prior experience whether alone or interacting with others in the group can allow their own unique style of movement to emerge in a playful way, at their own individual pace and intensity, and bring it to life together with others.
In Biodanza (from the Greek bios, “life,” and the Spanish danza, “dance”), the central aim is to encourage people to once again experience all facets of their lives, to rediscover all their motor and social skills, and to spontaneously express and expand all their emotions. This means once again perceiving life more fully in every moment with all the senses, both internally and externally and moving authentically in harmony with one’s own impulses, feelings, and needs.
The variety of activities and experiences offered within the safe setting of a group opens up new possibilities for participants and, beyond the Vivencia, new ways of interacting with everyday life and fellow human beings.
Rolando Toro, a psychologist, anthropologist, and artist, founded the Biodanza system in South America in the 1960s and has continued to develop it ever since. Today, it is taught all over the world. Biodanza is practiced in recreational settings, in schools, in preschools, and in rehabilitation and prevention programs.
Its effects include, for example:
- Increased zest for life, joy, and ability to experience pleasure
- Promotion of optimism, courage, self-confidence, and self-esteem
- Reduction of stress and anxiety; improvement of self-regulation of activity and rest/relaxation
- Strengthening of the immune system and self-healing abilities
- Heightened awareness of authentic feelings, needs, and fellow human beings
- Expanding social skills such as communication and interpersonal skills, connecting with or setting boundaries with others, and compassion
