Housing for international students

You will study in Göttingen and need accommodation? Then you are here in the right place! Studierendenwerk Göttingen also offers student housing for international students.

If you are interested in housing at the Studierendenwerk, apply early to one of our dormitories. These are very popular and there are often long waiting times, especially at the beginning of the semester in the months of March and in August/September. We recommend you apply for a dormitory as soon as Göttingen is your chosen place of study. Flexibility in rental start increases your chances of getting a dorm room.

Information about the online application and the link to the application portal can be found here.

If you come to Göttingen for a research stay, internship or short-term stay for 1 to a maximum of 12 months, you can apply for the Kreuzbergring 44-46 dormitory. When registering online, please note in which university institution in Göttingen you are doing your research stay, your internship, etc. and indicate your exact length of stay.

Erasmus / exchange programs

Are you a participant in an exchange program (Erasmus+, DD- und JD-Programme, etc.) and looking for a room? Please contact the Accommodation Service for international students of the department Göttingen International of the Georg-August-Universität. A direct application for a dormitory is not possible through the Studierendenwerk.

The Accommodation Service supports all Erasmus and partnership students, especially those who come to Göttingen for the first time and are in search for a place to reside. The accommodation service has a limited number of rooms. Among other things, Studierendenwerk Göttingen cooperates with the University (Accommodation Service) and provides a limited number of rooms for the periods 01 March / 01 April / 01 September and 01 October for a duration of 6 or 12 months in dormitories. Shorter rental periods are not possible. Your desire to have a room will be forwarded to us by Göttingen International.

All rooms we offer exchange students are furnished single rooms. (Single bed with mattress, wardrobe, desk, chair, table lamp and shelf). In these rooms we provide you with bed linen (pillows, duvet and 2 sets of duvet covers). Towels, dish towels, dishes and cooking utensils (pots, pans, etc.) you have to bring yourself. Kitchen and bath are shared with other students. The kitchen is equipped with the main electrical appliances (fridge, electric cooker, oven). In the following dormitories we offer rooms for exchange students:

  • Albrecht-Thaer-Weg 6-14b
  • Studentendorf, Gutenbergstraße 2-42
  • Studentensiedlung, Rosenbachweg 2-12
  • Robert-Koch-Straße 38
  • Christophorusweg 12
  • Akademische Burse, Goßlerstraße 13
  • Geiststraße 11a
  • Kreuzbergring 44-46
  • Goßlerstraße 23
  • Humboldtallee 40
  • Kreuzbergring 2

You want to know more about the above-mentioned dormitories? Via our overview list of dormitories, you can reach the dormitory page by clicking on the corresponding "Dormitory". There you will find out all you need to know about the selected dorm (for example, if  washing machine and tumble dryer are available or if there is a sink in the room) and you can see exterior views of the property.

Please note that subletting or interim letting is only possible in exceptional cases and only with the consent of Studierendenwerk!

Buddy-Service

Upon arrival in Göttingen, the Buddy Service can be used for orientation purposes. University students will pick you up at the train station or meet you on site, accompany you to your apartment and support you with some first information about the living environment.

Exchange students can register here (https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/504015.html). Registration is non-binding. You should also use this service to obtain your room key for the dormitories of the Studierendenwerk.

Student dormitories operated by Studierendenwerk Göttingen

Contact with the Studierendenwerk or the responsible dormitory administration before and during your stay is made by telephone or e-mail. If direct contact is unavoidable, you must make an appointment in advance by telephone or e-mail and wear a mouth-nose cover throughout.

If possible, you should make use of the Buddy Service to receive the key (see above, Buddy Service). A limited number of key safes are also available to give you access to the apartment key outside normal working hours. Please contact the administration of your dormitory if you want to use this option.

In the halls of residence of the Studierendenwerk, the current rules of conduct must be strictly and consistently observed. In common rooms (kitchen and bathroom) the wearing of a mouth-nose cover is recommended throughout.

If you have to go into self-isolation or quarantine, you must also inform the responsible dormitory administration. In this case, it is mandatory to wear a mouth and nose cover in all common rooms (kitchen and bathroom).

Further information can be obtained from the team of the Wohnheimverwaltung Dorf.

Private Housing - Tips for room search

In the private housing market, there is also not much affordable housing available at the beginning of the semester. Therefore, you should also plan for your search enough lead time. Please note that landlords like to get to know students personally. Often, a stay in Göttingen is required to find a room. Our tip: Before you arrive, reserve a place to stay in order to find a room on the private housing market. In your search, also consider that most rooms in Germany are rented unfurnished. Therefore, always check if furniture is available.

If you are in Göttingen, our team of the Servicebüro (service office) Studentisches Wohnen will help you with your search.

International students as subtenants

The children left the house and a room is empty for subletting? The exchange with other cultures and young people from all over the world is interesting and exciting?
The Accommodation Service of the University of Göttingen is always happy about residential offers for international students! Every year, several hundred foreign students come to Göttingen to attend an exchange program here at the university for one or two semesters, or to spend several years studying. The Accommodation Service assists foreign students in finding accommodation and helps them to find furnished accommodation for interim lease or as subtenants.
